1030 - eRX: Wide Scale Implementation Over a Short Period of Time - What We Did and Lessons Learned

ePrescribe enables providers to send electronic prescriptions (including controlled substances, if authorized) to participating pharmacies. Real-time insurance eligibility and formulary checking is performed within MEDITECH. This presentation will discuss implementing ePrescribe using a project management approach, include resource requirements, team roles and responsibilities, and the impact on operational and clinical workflows. Risa C. Rahm is the Director on the Medication Management and Pharmacy Services Clinical Informatics team for Hospital Corporation of America (HCA) in Nashville, Tennessee. Dr. Rahm provides leadership for enterprise wide adoption for multiple EHR projects including meaningful use, ePrescribe, medication reconciliation, and CPOE. She leads multiple projects in the medication management informatics space across the enterprise, which includes more than 250 hospitals and freestanding surgery centers located in 20 U.S. States and the United Kingdom. Dr. Rahm received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Mercer University College of Pharmacy in Atlanta, GA. and is CPHIMS certified. Prior to joining the HCA CSG team in an informatics role, she held multiple positions in HCA including Clinical Supervisor, Director of Pharmacy, Division Director of Pharmacy, and Corporate Director of Pharmacy Operations. Dr. Rahm is involved with multiple professional organizations, including FSHP where she was president from 2005-2006. Caren Fancher, PharmD, MSHS received her BS in Pharmacy Degree from Auburn University followed by her PharmD from the University of Florida. Currently, she works for HCA Information Technology Services in Nashville, TN.  She now serves as a Senior EHR Product Analyst for the Pharmacy Product Development team.  Her areas of responsibility include active participation in the development and support of Meaningful Use, CPOE, ePrescribing, Medication Reconciliation, and the pharmacy systems used by HCA, Lifepoint, and others supported by HCA ITS.  Dr. Fancher has been heavily involved in implementing CPOE and PYXIS in her previous facility IT pharmacist position and in her corporate role as part of the team implementing ePrescribing in approximately 160 hospitals. Before coming to HCA ITS, Caren worked in several roles over the past 20 years to include Assistant Director of Pharmacy, Neonatal Pharmacist, Critical Care Pharmacist and Residency Preceptor while following her husband’s naval career.
