1022 - STOP Acetaminophen Toxicity with MEDITECH

Acetaminophen is a widely used medication for pain control.  At recommended doses, acetaminophen use is safe.  However, amounts greater than 4,000 mg per day are associated with severe harm, such as liver damage.  Acetaminophen is found in many over-the-counter and prescription products used in hospitals, such Tylenol Injection, Percocet, Norco, and other such combinations. The vast array of products containing acetaminophen makes tracking, daily amounts consumed, a challenge.   Hospitals can overcome this challenge by automating the count of acetaminophen administered daily through the electronic health record (EHR).  Acetaminophen can be used to control pain safely in hospitalized patients, with the aid of EHR tools.
